Apple will tweak Chinese iPhones to comply with Qualcomm patent ruling

Apple to update iPhone software after threat of China ban

"All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China". Let's dive in to see some more details on the matter.

Apple has pledged to update its smartphone software in China to avoid a court-imposed sales ban following a legal spat with Qualcomm over alleged patent infringements. The two patents these smartphones infringe cover how users adjust and reformat photos and how apps are managed using a phone's touch screen.

Apple, which has filed a request for consideration, argues the decision harms China's interests by potentially raising the royalties and fees that phonemakers pay Qualcomm. Jiang Hongyi, the lawyer representing Qualcomm in the patent suits, told the Financial Times: "We plan to use the same patents to file suit against the 3 new iPhone models".

"Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case", Apple said in a statement.

If this satisfies the court, Apple would be allowed to continue selling the affected iPhone models, namely the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

"I think that Qualcomm and Apple, they always have those IP litigations to try to force the other side to make concessions". Furthermore, it was also stated that it could potentially cause irreparable damage to anyone involved. According to a new report by Reuters, Qualcomm is now trying to ban the sale of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR in the country, too. Apple claims that the current version, iOS 12, doesn't infringe Qualcomm's patents-though Qualcomm denies this. Share your views with us in the comments section below.

"Qualcomm's effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world", Apple said in a statement earlier this week.

The case against Apple is basically a part of a global patent dispute between the two tech giants which comprises of several lawsuits.
