Theresa May to remain as PM after winning confidence vote

Here's Something Theresa May Probably Didn't Think About Before Cancelling Today's Brexit Vote

Speaking at Downing Street after the vote result, a clearly shaken May admitted that she must get an improved deal from the EU.

"The new leader would not have time to negotiate a new withdrawal agreement and get the legislation through parliament by the 29th of March".

The Conservatives have 315 MPs, so 48 were needed to write such letters for the vote to be called. A result is expected fairly quickly after the voting finishes.

Fellow seasoned Brexiteer Owen Paterson, who was said to have sparked this vote, shared his letter of no confidence in The Telegraph Tuesday night, writing that "the Prime Minister's proposed "deal" is so bad that it can not be considered anything other than a betrayal of clear manifesto promises".

Corbyn reacted to the news by saying: "Tonight's vote makes no difference to the lives of our people". If all elected lawmakers cast their ballots, that would now mean 158 votes.

Mrs May requires 158 supporters to survive - after which there cannot be another contest for one year - although rejection by more than 100 Tory MPs could damage her fatally.

Wednesday's vote "still leaves exactly the same parliamentary arithmetic we had before this challenge began", said Robert Ford, a professor of political science at the University of Manchester.

"Weeks spent tearing ourselves apart will only create more division just as we should be standing together to serve our country". The thinking is that if the PM did not have the support of at least half of her backbenchers, she would have to go.

She now heads out to Brussels for an European Union summit on Thursday, hoping to win some concessions to help her persuade her critics to approval her deal in a "meaningful vote" expected in the New Year.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told her MPs on Wednesday she expects to step down before the next scheduled election in 2022, as she fought an immediate attempt to unseat her over her handling of Brexit by warning it could derail the process.

She had meetings on Tuesday with Germany's Angela Merkel and top European Union officials as part of efforts to get changes to her European Union deal to get it through the UK Parliament.

They echoed the prime minister's message that airing their divisions in public would undermine voters' trust in the Tory party - and it would be hard for any new leader to change the course of Brexit before the March 29 date on which Britain is due to leave the EU.

"She made absolutely clear that to get a deal, to deliver a deal the only way of doing it is with the Democratic Unionist Party", he said. They say warnings of economic doom are exaggerated.

But a rising number of backbench lawmakers, along with three of the four living former prime ministers, say the only way out of the impasse may be a new referendum with an option to stay. Some MPs have already insisted that this doesn't mean they will fall into line.

She was forced to postpone this week's vote in the House of Commons on the text after admitting she faced a huge defeat, as her own MPs joined with opposition parties to reject it.

"Conservatives must now answer whether they wish to draw ever closer to an election under Mrs May's leadership".

Why are they trying to get rid of her?

Anger has focused on the so-called "backstop" to prevent the return of a physical border in Northern Ireland.

"I will contest that vote with everything I have got", Mrs May added. If only one candidate comes forward, he or she becomes leader.

Who are the frontrunners to lead the party if she loses?

"Foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt said that he was "'backing Theresa May tonight.

Two former Brexit secretaries, David Davis and Dominic Raab, presented what they called "a better deal", at a press conference in Westminster on Wednesday.

'The government need to be putting the country first and providing real leadership at this time of constitutional crisis.

Still, he remains very popular with the party's membership: people queued for hours to see his speech at the Conservative Party Conference in October, which was widely seen as a pitch to replace May.

And Medway council leader Alan Jarrett said he had lost confidence in the leader but did not want her to stand aside yet.
