Qualcomm’s 2019 flagship mobile chipset will be the 5G-toting Snapdragon 855

The 5G Galaxy S10 with Snapdragon 855 was more or less confirmed by Samsung yesterday during Qualcomm's annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii.

Chipmaker Qualcomm announced its new mobile processor, the Snapdragon 855, which will enable mobile devices to connect to the latest mobile networking standard, 5G.

One of the most exciting features of Snapdragon 855 is its "multi-gigabit" download speeds on 5G network, which is set to arrive next year. "5G will fuel collaboration, connectivity and productivity worldwide, and we're excited to be at the forefront working alongside partners like Qualcomm Technologies to make the transformation to 5G a reality". Samsung has stepped up to the plate.

Verizon, AT&T, and Samsung also announced that a 5G-capable smartphone will be available in early 2019. He went on to say, "The Snapdragon 855 will define the premium tier in 2019". "In conjunction with Qualcomm Technologies, we have tested numerous underlying technologies that will be used to deliver 5G", said Fotis Karonis, executive advisor for 5G, BT Group.

Qualcomm isn't providing a lot of intricate details on the Snapdragon 855 today - those specifics will come at a later date - but the company has given us a few crumbs to munch on.

Things are just getting started here at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, so stay tuned this week for more information on topics such as 5G, Snapdragon 855, and Qualcomm-powered always on always connected PCs! Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor will reimagine the in-display fingerprint scanning by using ultrasonic waves instead of optical light for secure and accurate authentication even if the finger is covered in water or oil.

Apple may not be planning to release a 5G iPhone until at least 2020, but don't expect rival Android handset makers to be willing to hold on for so long. Qualcomm describes this as the world's first "commercial" ultrasonic under-the-display fingerprint solution for smartphones. However, in a saturated mobile market, it is up to device makers and carriers alike to properly present attractive use cases - alongside an appealing price point - if they want to create interest in 5G during its initial stages where availability of 5G networks are limited.

The company has also added a dedicated computer vision processor for intelligent cameras. It's not surprising Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon Elite Gaming suite of features. "Furthermore, this technology enables sleek, cutting-edge form factors while distinguishing itself from alternatives with higher levels of security and accuracy", it said in its blog post.
