How the NFL's "Willful Ignorance" Bungled the Handling of Kareem Hunt Case

Kareem Hunt cut by Kansas City Chiefs after alleged assault video on woman emerges

The video showed Hunt pushing the woman and kicking her when she was on the ground.

Running back Kareem Hunt has acknowledged lying to the Kansas City Chiefs about his role in a February assault in a Cleveland hotel that ultimately led to his release this week.

At just 23 years old, Hunt was already one of the NFL's most productive running backs.

Hunt can be signed by another team, but won't be allowed to play until the conclusion of the investigation, which "will include a review of the new information that was made public on Friday.as well as further conversations with all parties involved in the incident", the league said.

Most disturbing is the image of him kicking a woman and he offered no explanation for that. Abigail Ottinger, 19, and a friend were with Hunt and a group on a party bus earlier in the night and went back to Hunt's apartment, according to reports.

The NFL and the Chiefs said they could not obtain the video because the police and hotel would not cooperate. I was in the wrong. "I was raised by my mom and my grandma and it was just us", he said. Ware, who led the Chiefs in rushing in 2016, only to lose the starting job to Hunt last season because of a season-ending knee injury in the preseason, rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders. For me, I just see you have a long life to live and that doesn't mean just playing football - you need to just live one day at a time. I'm really disappointed and embarrassed in myself and for my family. "I didn't tell them everything", Hunt said.

The incident occurred about 3:45 a.m. on February 10, after Hunt invited friends over to his new apartment, and one of them apparently brought along Ottinger as a guest. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions.

After the video was released, the Chiefs made a decision to release Hunt, citing the fact he wasn't completely honest with them.

Hunt confirmed that in his interview with ESPN, which aired Sunday, and extended an apology to the team. The video released today confirms that fact.

"Consistent with investigatory practices, the National Football League continues to pursue a complete understanding of the facts", it said, adding that the investigation will include "further conversations with all parties involved in the incident".

For the Chiefs and the league, the fallout raises questions about the commitment to addressing domestic violence incidents, a problem it attempted to solve with an investigation after the Ray Rice public-relations crisis four years ago.
