Government to publish 'final and full' Brexit legal advice

Britain's former foreign secretary Boris Johnson has been an outspoken critic of Theresa May's Brexit deal

The amendment isn't legally binding - but it carries huge political weight and would be very hard for the government to ignore.

There is no requirement for the government to share legal advice on new policies, nor is there precedent for legal advice to be routinely published.

Senior government ministers are facing possible suspension from the House of Commons days before a crucial vote on Brexit after they were accused of holding Parliament in contempt.

Ms Leadsom had argued that the advice is confidential but opposition party Labour said the government was "wilfully refusing" to comply with an earlier order passed through parliament.

'We've listened carefully and in light of the expressed will of the House we will publish the final and full advice provided by the Attorney General to Cabinet but recognising the very serious constitutional issues this raises I have referred the matter to the privileges committee to consider the implications of the humble address'.

- How was the Government found to be in contempt? "It is, I think unprecedented for this House to find government ministers in contempt".

May's has long warned lawmakers that if they do not back her deal, they could open the door to Britain falling out of the European Union without any measures deal to soften the transition, or that Brexit might not happen.

At the Commons Business Committee, Toyota Europe deputy managing director Tony Walker warned that without a deal to protect cross-continent supply chains, its operations in the United Kingdom would face major challenges.

A cross-party motion was filed by a group of MPs, including Labour, DUP, Lib Dems, SNP. "So it looks like the deal won't pass next week".

Failure to do so would trigger a "backstop" arrangement that keeps Britain in an EU customs union - with Northern Ireland also following EU rules on regulation of goods. The Bank of England warned last week that a no-deal Brexit could plunge Britain into a severe recession.

"The government is upholding an important point of principle", the prime minister's spokesman said.

May faces a daunting struggle to secure parliament's approval in the key vote on December 11 after her plan was criticised by Brexit supporters and opponents alike.

In the most extreme no-deal scenario shopping bills could rise by up to 10%, but even in an orderly no-deal withdrawal, with a transition period, he said grocery prices could rise by 6%.

Advocate general Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona's non-binding opinion said Article 50 allows the "unilateral revocation of the notification of the intention to withdraw from the European Union, until such time as the Withdrawal Agreement is formally concluded".

The advice of the advocate general is often, but not always, followed by the full court, whose final verdict is expected within weeks.

But May's spokesman told reporters: "It does nothing in any event to change the clear position of the government that Article 50 is not going to be revoked".

But the advice bolstered anti-Brexit campaigners, who hope the decision to leave can be reversed.

An Anti Brexit campaigner waves flags in Westminster in London, Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018.

A so-called "meaningful vote" on May's deal will take place in the Commons following parliamentary discussions on December 11. No longer must the will of Parliament - reflecting the will of the people - be diminished.
