Microsoft dethrones Apple as the most valuable U.S. company

Shares of the iPhone maker have dropped sharply over the past several weeks, and the decline has erased about $300 billion in market capitalization from the company, which crested at a record $1.1 trillion valuation in early October.

Since stock prices continue to fluctuate, Microsoft and Apple are still vying for the title of being the most valuable USA company. Considering that not long ago Apple (and Amazon not too long after) broke $1 trillion valuation, it has come a long way down since then, due in part to Apples latest (and most expensive) smartphones (XR, XS, XS Max) not selling as well as anticipated.

"After briefly claiming the top spot on Monday, Microsoft shares rose 0.6 percent Tuesday, pushing the company's market value to $828.1 billion at the close".

The famous Apple vs Microsoft has always been one of the heated arguments among fans or enthusiasts. The last time Microsoft was bigger than Apple by this metric was in mid-2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. In August, Apple became the first U.S. company with a $1 trillion valuation. When he took over in 2014, Nadella said he wanted to focus on its subscription-based businesses and the cloud.

Apple has been under pressure since a November 1 earnings announcement when it reported strong jumps in quarterly profits but notched weaker-than-anticipated iPhone sales and a disappointing outlook for the key holiday period.

According to Rich Ross, a technical analyst at Evercore ISI, Apple's stock "has another 18 per cent downside", which could take the stock to $140, its 200-week moving average. "It is not bullish when the biggest stock in the world is in "falling knife" mode", he wrote to clients Monday. Apple's market cap was slightly less.
