Pak Terrorist, Wanted In Kashmir Editor's Murder, Killed In Encounter

Naveed Jutt killed in congested Budgam locality

Jatt and another terrorist were killed by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district. As the search party closed in on the militants, they opened fired on the security forces, triggering the encounter. He was also involved in attacks on security establishments and "many other civilian atrocities", police said.

A Pakistani national belonging to Multan, Jatt, had escaped from police custody on February 6, when he was being taken for a medical check-up to a hospital from the Srinagar Central Jail. He also conspired and executed several bank robberies and attacks in south Kashmir including the attack on the Court Complex Pulwama in March 2014 in which two policemen were killed.

Naveed Jatt alias Hanzalla "was known as the commander of proscribed terror outfit LeT", the Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a statement.

The police had earlier said Bukhari was shot by terrorists on instructions from Pakistan as he was active in Track-2 diplomacy on the Kashmir issue.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh said that they will write to the Union Home ministry to inform Islamabad to take his body.

Trained at the LeT's Muridke headquarters in Pakistan, Jatt is reported to have entered Kashmir in 2012, through Kupwara sector.

At a press conference in Srinagar, Singh told reporters Jatt's killing was good news for the people of the Valley.

The killing of Jutt and another militant sparked off protests and clashes between stone-throwing youth and security forces at Kuthipora of Budgam, leaving eleven persons including two CRPF jawans injured, reports said.

Police said an operation was launched at around 3am on Wednesday on the specific intelligence-based information about the presence of two to three militants in Chattergam.

Bukhari, the 50-year-old editor-in-chief of the Rising Kashmir newspaper, was attacked by three motorcycle-borne gunmen while he was entering his vehicle in the Press Enclave area of Srinagar on June 14 this year. He had a long history of "terror crime records" since 2012, the police said.

Police later recovered the bodies of the militants from the site.

According to police, 13 FIRs had been filed against Jatt in Srinagar and South Kashmir this year alone. He was part of the militant Ajmal Kasab group at a madrassa in Pakistan where he had undergone arms training.
