Mueller says ex-Trump campaign chairman Manafort lied to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Breaking Court filing details stunning development in Mueller investigation

Mueller's investigators said in a court filing Monday that Manafort violated his plea agreement by lying multiple times to Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel investigators.

Manafort's team, however, said he "believes he has provided truthful information and does not agree with the government's characterization or that he has breached the agreement".

Prosecutors don't lightly accuse people of breaching a cooperation agreement, said Mimi Rocah, a former federal prosecutor.

Of course this is all just speculation, and perhaps Manafort has other reasons for allegedly lying to investigators.

Instead, the document laid bare the differences between two sides who have met repeatedly since Manafort entered his guilty plea on September 17 before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson.

"Courts are different than the Mueller team's mandate for secrecy", Cevallos told "Morning Joe."Anything that's filed in court, unless it's filed under seal, and there's a presumption against filing things under seal in federal court, will be publicly available".

Trump's ongoing attacks against the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller have become more virulent this month, after the president installed a new acting attorney general who has strongly criticized Mueller's probe and suggested cutting its purse-strings. With a circumstance like this, only one side of the deal gets torn up - and that's the prosecutors' promises of mercy, they said in the filing Monday. He called for proceeding to a sentencing hearing. The special counsel has done a lot of work for nothing - or at best, nothing the DoJ couldn't have accomplished on its own regarding Manafort and his ex-partner Rick Gates. He faces multiple years in prison. He was previously convicted on bank and tax fraud charges following a late summer trial in Alexandria, Virginia. He also faces an additional 10 years in the Virginia case.

Manafort denied doing so intentionally, but both sides agreed in a court filing that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District should set sentencing immediately.

Earlier Monday, former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos reported to a prison in Wisconsin to serve a 14-day sentence for lying to investigators.

"Wait until it comes out how horribly & viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie", he wrote on Twitter, adding that Mueller is a "conflicted prosecutor gone rogue". It also means that Mueller's team is losing a cooperating witness from the top of Donald Trump's presidential campaign who was present for several key episodes under investigation.
