Hundreds of Central American migrants who tried to force through a Mexican police blockade into the United States retreated to a nearby camp Monday after USA border agents pushed them back with tear gas and rubber bullets. Some of the migrants threw rocks over the border fence, presumably to hit U.S. Border Patrol officers.

The use of tear gas has drawn rebukes from Democrats in Washington, from immigration activists elsewhere, and from the Honduran government whose citizens are a majority of the illegal immigrants who broke into Mexico and caravanned their way across to reach the USA border.

The chaos comes as USA and Mexican officials wrangle over the issue of migration and discuss how to deal with asylum-seekers waiting in Mexico.

He said the US Border Patrol's use of force policy allows agents to use tear gas, but added the incident would be reviewed.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that 42 migrants who illegally crossed the U.S. -Mexico border over the weekend are now in custody. They were pushed back by tear gas will be deported by Mexico.

Video footage taken by Epoch Times journalist Charlotte Cuthbertson on November 25 shows migrants trying to get through the border fencing before they're repelled by Border Patrol agents.

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry - the busiest land border crossing in the western hemisphere, according to the federal government - was shut down for around five hours Sunday.

Dozens of migrants who illegally crossed the US border this weekend as part of a chaotic rush at one of the boundary's busiest entry points are now in custody, a senior Homeland Security official told Fox News.

"We can't have all these people here", Mujica told The Associated Press.

"Tear gassing families seems unnecessary", Lee Gelernt, the deputy director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project, told CNN. Their presence has drawn Mexican troops, protesters and fiery rhetoric from President Donald Trump and Mexican officials.

"Agents said the incident harked to the days in the 1990s when migrants would run across the border en masse, in so-called banzai runs that would overwhelm agents", the Times reported. Arriving at the border, some chanted, "We are not criminals!" During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for a wall.

She had been at the bottom of the river - a concrete riverbed conveying a trickle of water - near the border with her daughter when USA agents fired tear gas. Asylum applications jumped 35 percent between fiscal year 2016 and 2017, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which was driven in part by a surge in applications from people fleeing violence in Central America and Mexico.
