There ARE Contingency Plans In Place For An Alien Landing, Astronomer Claims

An artist's depiction of Oumuamua the first detected interstellar object

A new paper by researchers at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics raises the possibility that the elongated dark-red object, which is 10 times as long as it is wide and traveling at speeds of 196,000 miles per hour, might have an "artificial origin".

A Hawaiian telescope first spotted "Oumuamua", meaning "a messenger from afar, arriving first" in Hawaiian, in October 2017. According to NASA, "Oumuamua" is up to a quarter-mile long and has reached speeds of 196,000 miles per hour.

"It is impossible to guess the goal behind Oumuamua without more data", Avi Loeb, chairman of Harvard's astronomy department and a co-author of the paper, told NBC News in an email.

Speaking with Universe Today, Mr Loeb said: "We explain the excess acceleration of Oumuamua away from the sun as the result of the force that the sunlight exerts on its surface".

'Oumuamua is the first interstellar object ever observed in the solar system. Its unusual origin story wasn't the only thing that set Oumuamua apart from other comets and asteroids - it was also odd in shape; highly elongated, like a cosmic cigar. "Lightsails with similar dimensions have been designed and constructed by our own civilization", an excerpt from the paper read. Other scientists deemed it a comet, despite the lack of a traditional tail. "The lightsail technology might be abundantly used for transportation of cargos between planets or between stars". It is about 400 meters long and 40 wide, and has been tracked by several telescopes as the first detected object from another star system.

The authors argue that if Oumuamua were just a random interstellar rock, we should have seen more objects like it. But Oumuamua wasn't "coma", of the atmosphere and dust that surround the comet, when they melt.

Of course, the pair aren't claiming that Oumuamua's definitely of alien origin.

A new study as found a huge cigar-shaped object travelling through space could be an alien spaceship.

The Harvard scientists speculated that solar radiation hitting a solar sail could explain why the mysterious object started moving faster.

A massive flattened boulder-like object traveling through space with "peculiar acceleration" could be an alien craft, according to a new study.

It's also entirely possible - perhaps more possible - that the object isn't part of a far-flung alien race's attempts to investigate the (other) occupants of the Milky Way.

The scientists are not claiming with certainty that Oumamua was definitely of alien origin (they admit in their paper that scenario is "exotic"), but the shape was determined to have come from outside our solar system.
