Early voting in Florida surges past 2014 totals

Early voter turnout strong across state

Polls will be open from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m. for the November 6 elections.

Tuesday, November 6: General Election Day, polls are open 6 a.m.to 8 p.m.

Importantly, the deadline to return mail-in ballots to the county Board of Elections for counting has changed. Another 1.6 million+ have been sent mail-in ballots but have not returned them yet.

The total turnout in OR for this year's midterm election is already approaching presidential election levels, according to the office of Secretary of State Dennis Richardson.

It's one thing to see Virginia more than doubling its 2014 early turnout.

Election officials previously reported a surge in voter registration to record levels. The state has settled firmly into Republican-dominated territory.

There are more than 13 million registered voters in Florida. Democrats saw a 52.6 percent turnout with 20,417 ballots cast.

In Illinois, voters are deciding all statewide offices including governor, as well as several competitive congressional and other races.

The 2012 presidential election drew almost 357,000 early voters in Louisiana, and the 2016 competition between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton saw 531,000 people casting ballots early. Republican businessman Kevin Stitt faces Democrat and former state attorney general Drew Edmondson. There are crossover voters, even in this hyperpartisan era. The 40 percent figure of young voters planning to vote in the midterms is double the 2014 rate for the same demographic.

For the scorekeepers, though, Virginia, among the states that doesn't have party registration, is replicating its 2017 voting boom - and Democrats swept the top offices a year ago even amid strong GOP turnout.

Though still outnumbered by more than 2 to 1 in terms of registered voters, county Democrats appear be making some strides in pushing turnout.

The latest numbers from the Oklahoma State Election Board show early voters in the state's three largest counties are turning out in much greater numbers than the last midterm elections. There are now 30,524 active registered voters in the city and 78,253 in the county.

In contrast, for people 65 and older who had voted early and in person, about 7 percent didn't vote in 2016.

"There's been a really big push", he said.

A similar turnout this year would result in about 6.65 million voters going to the polls, although some suggest the turnout will be higher.

In past presidential years, two-thirds to three-fourths of voters cast early ballots, de Leon said. "We'll need more parking and more people working".

Negrete reported from NY.
