Cops release first photos of Saudi sisters found duct-taped together

A passerby called police after spotting the bodies

NY police said Rotana Farea, 22, and her 16-year-old sister Tala Farea, both of Fairfax County, Virginia, were discovered Wednesday afternoon near 68th Street and Riverside Drive on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

She told detectives, according to the New York Post, that the day before their bodies were discovered, she received a phone call from the Saudi Arabian embassy informing her that the family's residency in the U.S. was in jeopardy because the two had applied for immigration asylum.

The medical examiner's office will determine the causes of death as the investigation continues.

She said that she had not seen her daughters since December 2017, when she reported them missing to police in Fairfax.

The Saudi Consulate General said in a statement that embassy officials had contacted their family, and added that the sisters were students "accompanying their brother in Washington".

Tala Farea was listed as missing by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as of August 24, and "may be with her sister", the center said.

A passerby called 911 at 2.40pm on Wednesday after spotting the two bodies, which were found laying on rocks by the river when police arrived at the scene.

Some reports indicate that the older sister, Rotana, may have been living in NY. Surveillance cameras showed no signs of them on the bridge.

The family, originally from Jeddah, had not experienced any major familial troubles, a relative told Saudi newspaper Arab News, dismissing reports they may had taken their own lives.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said Wednesday that investigators had been in touch with the victim's family, and felt they were finally close to shedding some light on the mysterious case.

When officers located the girls, they requested protection and were placed in a shelter, according to the New York Times.

In a statement released today, the Saudi Arabian Consulate General in NY said the Farea sisters were "citizens accompanying their brother in Washington" and it had "appointed an attorney to follow the case closely".

The Farea sisters' deaths have been shrouded in mystery since last week.
