Mexican police says migrants in caravan will cross border in orderly fashion

Record number of families crossing U.S. border has President Trump outraged Report

United States President Donald Trump is threatening to deploy the military and close the country's southern border as more Hondurans and Salvadorans join thousands of migrants in Guatemala heading north.

In a series of tweets, Trump said that if Mexico is incapable of stopping the immigrants, he will "call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!"

On Thursday, Trump said he prioritizes border security over even the recently struck trade deal to replace NAFTA, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

The White House also threatened economic sanctions if Central American nations did not stop a "caravan" of up to 3,000 migrants which set off from Honduras last week and is on its way towards Mexico with the goal of claiming asylum in the... Earlier this year, some National Guard members were deployed to the border on a limited mission that does not include contact with migrants.

He called on Mexico to ensure the migrants do not reach the USA border while threatening Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador with financial penalties. His successor is Lopez Obrador, who has been cooperative in trade talks between the US and Mexico.

"Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras... we need to make sure that the root causes are solved".

Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico's foreign minister-designate, downplayed Trump's comments as aimed at his domestic political base.

The march of the migrant has swollen now to 4,000 people, mostly Hondurans.

In contrast to the earlier caravan, which moved deeper into the interior of Mexico before officials began intensive efforts to process the migrants, the Mexican government has focused on the new group right on its southern border with Guatemala.

Honduran migrants in a caravan heading to the United States, walk in direction of the border with Mexico as they leave Guatemala City on October 18, 2018.

Mexico says people arriving at the border will be able to apply for refugee status, and has asked for help from the United Nations refugee agency. It was unclear if they were trying to swim across to the Mexico side of border, back to Guatemala or just get relief from the crowds on the bridge. One migrant said: 'One way or another, we will pass'.

Central American migrants hiked from Honduras through muddy jungle and residential streets, some toting babies along with backpacks, Reuters images show.

Mexican president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador plans to offer work visas to Central Americans when he takes office in December.

Late on Thursday night, a small number of the Honduran group who broke off from the main crowd were able to successfully cross over into Mexico.

White House officials say if an individual evades the new system and reaches the United States border, Mexico will now allow the refugees to be returned to its country.

"It was predictable, and it's also very close to the election", he said.
