CDC expresses concern over mysterious surge in polio-like paralysis cases

Five kids in Maryland may have a polio-like disease, as CDC investigates

Like polio, acute flaccid myelitis affects the gray matter of the spinal cord, often causing lifelong paralysis of the muscles. He says while the preceding illness may be a virus, there's no need to rush your child to a doctor just because they have a cold.

The CDC reports it mostly affects children, and so far this year there have been 62 confirmed cases in the United States.

More than 90 percent of the cases are in children 18 years and younger. Right now the CDC says the likelihood of someone developing AFM is one in 1 million. Officials advised parents not to panic, but remain vigilant for any sudden onset of symptoms. The agency is also urging health-care professionals to be vigilant about the possibility of AFM in patients.

Despite its similarity to polio, none of the AFM patients has tested positive for the poliovirus, Messonnier said.

Less than one in one million people in the US get AFM each year, but the cases are spiking over the last few weeks. Yet, experts still do not understand crucial aspects of the disease, including its origins and who is most at risk.

On Wednesday, Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville confirmed that a 3-year-old girl was recently diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), an extremely rare condition that causes muscles and reflexes to become weak.

The agency has not yet confirmed whether the New Hampshire patient, a juvenile from Rockingham County, contracted AFM or if it is another illness, said Jake Leon, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Human Services. Certain viruses that can cause AFM or similar neurologic conditions include polio, West Nile, and adenoviruses. They have not isolated the cause of these cases.

"We have a lot of anger toward the CDC", said Gary, 37, speaking as a member of the AFM parent community. Since then, no large outbreaks of virus have occurred, according to the CDC. "We know that some patients diagnosed with AFM have recovered quickly and some continue to have paralysis and require ongoing care", Messonnier said.

Health officials call the condition acute flaccid myelitis.

Physicians first began noticing an increase in AFM patients in 2014, with roughly 120 confirmed cases. The CDC has yet to figure out a common link between all the cases that have been reported, although they did note that several of them seem to have been linked to infections by other viruses, enterovirus D68.

The long-term effects of the disease are also unknown. The CDC actually doesn't know what causes the disease or much about it at all. Outbreaks appear to follow an every-other-year pattern with another sharp rise in 2016, primarily in late summer and early fall. "For some of the previous cases we've identified one pathogen or another, but we have no unifying diagnosis".

The disorder has been diagnosed in unvaccinated children and also in children who have received some of their recommended vaccinations, she said.

Since the condition was first recognized by CDC in 2014, the agency has confirmed 386 cases nationally through October 16, mostly in children.
