Mega Millions jackpot inches closer to $1 billion

A Mega Millions ticket

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is one out of 302 million.

Lottery officials have said that the change was in response to demand from players that they wanted to start with a big jackpot and have a better shot at smaller prizes, such as getting your $2 back all the way up to a $1 million payout for matching all five numbers.

Tuesday's Mega Millions winning numbers were 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 with a Mega Ball of 9 for a jackpot worth $667 million at the time.

The next Powerball drawing will be on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 with an estimated Grand Prize of $430,000,000, or $248,000,000 cash.

The largest Powerball jackpot - and biggest in US lottery history - was $1.586 billion, which was shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January 2016. Michigan Lottery said the majority of tickets for a jackpot are purchased on the day of the drawing.

The $970 million refers to the annuity option, paid over 29 years.

If you want to find out if you picked some or all of the Mega Millions winning numbers this week, go to megamillions.com or lottery.net after the drawing.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Mega Millions jackpot has grown to $970 million.

No one won the jackpot, which was set at $378 million.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The all-time highest Mega Millions jackpot is now even bigger. In that year, lottery ticket sales eclipsed the combined total of what Americans spent on movies, video games, books, music and sports tickets.
