NASA Astronaut Nick Hague Thanks Rescuers, Supporters After Soyuz Rocket Launch Abort

U.S. astronaut Nick Hague right and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin crew members of the mission to the International Space Station wave as they board the rocket prior to the launch of Soyuz-FG rocket at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome Kazakhs

The two-man US-Russian crew of a Soyuz spacecraft en route to the International Space Station was forced to make a dramatic emergency landing in Kazakhstan yesterday when their rocket failed mid-air.

What was expected to be a six-hour flight to the International Space Station was abruptly curtailed when the rocket reached an altitude of approximately 164,000 feet, at the cusp of space.

USA and Russian space officials said the astronauts were in good condition even though they experienced a gravitational force that was six-to-seven times more than is felt on Earth when their capsule went into a steep, harrowing fall back to the ground.

NASA said it has been informed by Russian space officials that the crew has made an emergency landing at an unspecified location in Kazakhstan and is in good condition.

Appearing at times emotional, he said he was "confident" a new manned mission to the International Space Station would go ahead as planned in December, praising the "wonderful relationship" between the Russian and USA space agencies.

"Confirming again that the today's Soyuz MS10 launch did go into a ballistic re-entry mode a little bit after its launch", Dean said during live television commentary. They were to join three of their colleagues at the International Space Station and to deliver supplies to the orbiting outpost.

And with the news the crew - Alexey Ovchinin, a Russian cosmonaut, and Nick Hague an American astronaut - are in good health according to officials, attention has somewhat inevitably turned to the more humorous side of the misfire.

Bridenstine, who is visiting Russia and Kazakhstan for the first time since his appointment as Nasa chief this year, observed the launch from Baikonur cosmodrome with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Rogozin.

The aborted mission dealt another blow to the troubled Russian space program, which now serves as the only way to deliver astronauts to the space station.

Roscosmos say they are forming a commission to investigate the launch failure.

Space X and Boeing are both working on ships that could transport astronauts to the station without relying on the Russian space program. They will be transported to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia outside of Moscow.

Russia's RIA news agency reported that Russian Federation has immediately suspended all manned space launches after the failure. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine was in attendance at the launch in order to discuss with Russian space agency Roscosmos a mysterious hole that had apparently been drilled through the side of the last Soyuz vehicle.

Bridenstine praised the Soyuz emergency rescue system, saying it functioned like a "miracle". As you can see from video of the NASA livestream, early reports indicate that the booster failed minutes after liftoff.

Bridenstine also took the opportunity to reaffirm NASA's faith in the rocket, and Roscosmos, stating that the next mission planned for December, should take place on schedule.
