Ballon d'Or 2018: Ronaldo, Courtois nominated but De Gea misses out

The Ballon d'Or, now separate from FIFA's own player of the year award, is bestowed annually by France Football magazine. Although Manchester United keeper David de Gea seems to have not been chosen in the shortlist for the footballing award.

Back in May, Salah looked on course to be in contention for 2018's Ballon d'Or.

Antoine Griezmann is one of the great favorites to take the prize due to his triumphs in the Europe League, the UEFA Super Cup title and, above all, the World Cup in Russian Federation, where he was one of the most outstanding players.

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero is nominated as is another prolific South American striker, Edinson Cavani of Uruguay and Paris Saint-Germain.

Having finished third in 2016, Griezmann, who won the Europa League last term with Atletico as well as lifting the World Cup with France over the summer.

Four goalkeepers are also among the 30 - Thibaut Courtois of Belgium and Real Madrid, Liverpool and Brazil stopper Alisson Becker, Tottenham's France World Cup victor Hugo Lloris and Atletico's Jan Oblak.

Other top players nominated for the award are, Neymar, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Luka Modric and Harry Kane. "The Ballon d'Or must be won by a French player".

There will be 30 players on the long list and City fans will be keeping fingers crossed that one or two more of our players will make the nominations list.

The ceremony to announce the victor will take place in Paris on 3 December, when a women's award will also be presented for the first time.
