Trump 'fell in love' with Kim Jong Un after 'beautiful letters'

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho

North Korea's foreign minister says continued U.S. sanctions on Pyongyang are deepening mistrust in his country.

The minister instead highlighted three meetings between Kim and South Korean leader Moon Jae-in in the past five months and added: "If the party to this issue of denuclearisation were South Korea and not the United States, the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula would not have come to such a deadlock".

Ri said this lack of confidence in Washington is the reason denuclearization discussions have stalled since the historic Singapore summit in June between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un.

This was decidedly so during an exchange of threats between Washington and Pyongyang that accompanied a run of increasingly powerful weapons tests previous year that put the North on the brink of its claim to be a full-fledged nuclear power, and had some fearing war.

Somewhere the middle of his speech, after suggesting the US was about to go to war with the North Korea when he took office, Trump waxed nostalgic about how he and Kim exchanged threats to annihilate each other with nuclear weapons, then claimed it was Kim's "beautiful letters" that turned everything around.

"They're great letters. We fell in love", he repeated.

"The reason behind the recent deadlock is because the U.S. relies on coercive methods, which are lethal to trust-building", Ri said in his speech. "That was a big, big problem", Trump told the crowd. Okay? No really. He wrote me lovely letters, and they're great letters. "And we would go back and forth", Trump said at a rally in West Virginia.

Trump also said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was interested in a second meeting.

North and South Korea see declaring the end of the war as a key to building trust between the United States and North Korea.

"The recent dramatic improvement of the North-South relations and the atmosphere of cooperation clearly show how decisive the role of trust-building can be", he said.

Trump and Kim signed a peace agreement when they met in Singapore in June, but the terms of the accord were vague and lacking substance. Trump said the two would meet again in the "very near future" and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached.

China and Russian Federation have called for a reduction in sanctions on North Korea in exchange for steps it has taken so far.

Nevertheless, Trump cheered his summit, claiming that North Korea "no longer" posed a nuclear threat.

However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the UN Security Council on Thursday that "enforcement of Security Council sanctions must continue vigorously and without fail until we realise the fully, final, verified denuclearisation".
