Trump says he rejected meeting with Canada's Trudeau

Trump Confirms Rejecting Trudeau's Meeting Invite: 'I Told Him 'Forget About It''

Donald Trump has blasted Canada over the slow pace of Nafta talks, claiming he was so unhappy that he had rejected Justin Trudeau's request for a one-on-one meeting.

Referring to Trudeau, Trump said Wednesday: "His tariffs are too high and he doesn't seem to want to move".

"We are continuing to work on getting to a right deal for Canada, a right deal for Canadians. That's the big one", Trump explained.

"We know that Canada's interests are what we have to stand up for and we will", Trudeau said, speaking at the Council of Foreign Relations in NY. "We think their negotiators have taken advantage of our country for a long time", he said.

"Canada's not making concessions in areas we think are essential", Lighthizer continued.

In his remarks Wednesday, Trump also said the Americans don't like Canada's trade representative "very much" - a comment that appeared to be directed at Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.

"If it doesn't happen by the end of the week, we'll just keep working away and trying to get the best deal for Canada", David MacNaughton told a Toronto event arranged by Politico Canada.

In a direct attack on NAFTA itself, President Trump added: "I don't like NAFTA". The president said it would be called "USM", for the US and Mexico, instead of "USMC", and offered blunt criticism of the Canadian team engaged in the talks.

And he warned the United States would soon go after Canadian auto imports.

"The Americans are finding that the negotiations are tough because Canadians are tough negotiators, as we should be", he told reporters Thursday morning on his way into a cabinet meeting. "How do you sell a dairy product at 300 per cent (tariff)?" Canada imposed tariffs on $12.5 billion of United States goods, including steel, toffee, maple syrup, coffee beans and strawberry jam. I've never liked it, it's been very bad for the United States. The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association has warned that the auto tariffs could affect billions of dollars' worth of exports and lead to the loss of more than 100,000 jobs across the country.

US automakers and congressional aides now believe a deal with Canada is not possible by the deadline, which they said would most likely prompt the United States to move ahead with a bilateral agreement with Mexico. It's been great for Canada.

A spokesperson for Trudeau, however, said this was not true and that Trudeau never sought a meeting with Trump during the NY gathering.
