Paul Pogba vs. Jose Mourinho

Set to be rewarded for his improvement

Mourinho made the move to exert his authority at the club and remind Pogba of his place in the team, according to The Times' Paul Hirst.

It's unknown what sparked the argument but Pogba was visibly unhappy at what he was being told by his manager, with some fans suggesting that he also said "Get Paul home!" at the one-minute mark.

Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal after a torrid spell under the Dutchman, and bought Pogba from Juventus for £89 million, a then world record-fee.

While it is not clear what Jose Mourinho told Paul Pogba but the Frenchman was clearly not happy with it and gave a sort of death stare to the manager and even uttered some words.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss denied there has been any fall out with Pogba but footage of the 25-year-old's welcome to the AON Training Complex pitches the day after made for intriguing viewing.

'People saying Mourinho is causing problems, taking the captaincy off him, but he's not really a captain is he, Pogba, in terms of how he plays, he's letting his agent speak negatively about the club.

"I am the manager, I make these decisions, no fallout at all, no problem at all".

Following the 3-2 defeat to Brighton, he admitted his attitude had not been right and after the draw with Wolves questioned why United were unable to produce more attacking football at Old Trafford, while appearing to point the finger at Mourinho.

Juan Mata opened the scoring early on, before a stunning free-kick from Harry Wilson and a Jack Marriott header put the visitors ahead.

The pair's strained relationship is in stark contrast to the one between the Portuguese and Frank Lampard during their successful time together at Chelsea.

But in his programme notes for Tuesday's game, which Derby won on penalties, Mourinho said he was unhappy with some members of his squad.

Pogba has been United's stand-in captain for three games when regular skipper Antonio Valencia has been missing.

Carragher came to the defence of Mourinho by pointing to his time at Chelsea as evidence that it is not him with the problem and insisted United would be wise to stick with him through this hard period.

'There's a power play going on here, ' said Carragher on Sky Sports.
