Mourinho tells Manchester United squad Paul Pogba will never captain club again

Jose Mourinho

The 28-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Manchester United team so far this season, scoring one goal in four Premier League starts for Jose Mourinho's men.

Preparations for Tuesday's Carabao Cup match against Derby were disrupted by claims the club-record signing's relationship with the manager has reached a new low.

Asked what is stopping United attacking more, Pogba said: "I can't tell you because I'm a player".

The Frenchman has captained the side on three occasions this season in the absence of Antonio Valencia, who was made de facto club captain after Michael Carrick retired.

"The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager's decision", the source added.

"That is how Wolves treated Saturday's game and I am sure it is how Derby's players will regard tonight's match".

Phil Jones finally missed from the spot after 15 successful penalties in a high quality shootout.

Tensions appeared to have simmered, with the midfielder striking twice in the 3-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League last week, only for Pogba to go on the attack again at the weekend.

But things didn't go to plan as the Red Devils were dumped out of the competition 2-1 after Sergio Romero was sent off. "When we play like (that) it's easier for us".

"I'm shell shocked. What a performance", declared Lampard. We had the personality to take penalties and play the way we did.

The latest figures came as Ed Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman, offered his backing to Jose Mourinho at the same time as leaving the manager under no illusions about the importance of winning and blooding home-grown talent. "The feeling I got from it was vast, it's an incredible feeling for me".
