Iran criticises the Netherlands for 'sheltering terrorists' after parade attack

After attack in Iran, the US offers a muted response

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards has vowed to exact "deadly and unforgettable" vengeance for an attack on a military parade that killed 25 people, including 12 of their comrades, as Tehran accused Gulf Arab states of backing the gunmen.

The dead from Saturday's attack in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, blamed on Arab separatists, ranged from a disabled war hero to a four-year-old boy.

Terrorists on Saturday opened fire at a crowd of people during a military parade in Ahvaz, killing 25 military personnel and civilians - including women and children - and wounding at least 68 others.

State media said the four attackers were dead.

President Hassan Rouhani said yesterday Iran was ready to confront the United States and its Gulf Arab allies, a day after an attack on an Iranian military parade killed 29 people, including children and 12 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

The coffins were draped in Iranian flags and mourners carried pictures of those killed, as well as banners saying "we will stand to the end" and "no to terrorism".

The State Department later offered a statement from spokeswoman Heather Nauert, who said that the USA government was aware of the reports of an attack.

Hossein Salami, the deputy head of the Revolutionary Guard, was at a funeral for one of the attack's victims when he reportedly said, "You have seen our revenge before".

The victims were primarily members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Qasemi said the Danish and Dutch ambassadors were told that Iran had already warned their respective governments about the presence of the "terrorists" and called for their arrest and trial.

Caskets of those who died in a terror attack on a military parade in Iran are displayed in Ahvaz, Iran.

The attack was claimed by an Ahvaz separatist group on an opposition televisioini station based in London by a spokesman based in Copenhagen.

Senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards have said the Ahvaz attack was carried out by militants trained by Gulf states and Israel, as well as supported by America.

Both Trump and Rouhani are attending this week's U.N. General Assembly in NY.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said late on September 22 that the United States "condemns all acts of terrorism and the loss of any innocent lives". But it is unlikely the IRGC will strike any of these foes directly.

It answers to Ayatollah Khamenei and has an estimated 125,000-strong military with army, navy and air units.

Mahmoud Falaki, a teacher attending the funerals, said the ceremony showed Iranians "are always ready to scarify ourselves for our country".

Accusations against Gulf countries will nearly certainly antagonise Iran's regional foe Saudi Arabia.

He engineered Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that ushered in a cautious detente with Washington before tensions flared anew with President Donald Trump's decision in May to pull out of the accord and reimpose sanctions on Tehran.
