Trump challenges Kavanaugh accuser over account of sex attack

President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is sworn in before the Senate Judiciary Commi

Ford said in an interview published on Sunday that Kavanaugh drunkenly pinned her to a bed on her back, groped her and put his hand over her mouth to stifle her screams at a house party in the early 1980s.

They argue they've given every opportunity for Ford to get her story directly to the Judiciary Committee without the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - either to committee staffers or to members. "But I don't think you can delay it any longer". He denies the allegations.

Ford's lawyers told the committee she refuses to appear on Monday, calling the date set by Republicans "arbitrary", according to multiple United States news reports.

"The most consequential decision I've made in my entire career is the decision not do something, and that was to not fill the vacancy after the death of Justice Scalia", McConnell said, referring the decision to hold up President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.

Both cited an email the lawyers sent to the committee seeking to negotiate a new date for the hearing, after committee chairman Chuck Grassley set a deadline of Friday morning to agree to appear on Monday.

"With the battle over the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court being charged by sexual assault accusations and at the nearly one-year anniversary of the start of #MeToo, you'd think that America would be split by gender on this", said Cliff Young, president of Ipsos.

Ford's lawyers repeated their call for the matter to be dealt with in a rigorous investigation, not what Democrats describe as a rushed hearing in the Republican-dominated Senate aimed at confirming Kavanaugh as quickly as possible.

Katz added in her communication to the committee Thursday: "Dr. Ford has asked me to let you know that she appreciates the various options you have suggested".

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to the bench.

McConnell on Friday spoke at the Values Voter Summit, sounding very confident that allegations from Christine Blasey Ford are a mere hiccup in Kavanaugh's confirmation process, as his GOP colleague said.

-She wants to the panel to subpoena Mark Judge, the other person Ford says was in the room when Kavanaugh allegedly attacked her. Judge has said he never saw Kavanaugh behave as Ford has described.

Since Ford has filled out the troubling details of her accusation and attached her name to them, they can not treated so casually. Trump continued, "I go through this with them ever single day in D.C". As expected, it dropped among Democrats even further, yet Independents saw the most significant change, their net support plummeting by 31 points.

"Hopefully he can keep it together until Monday", the White House official told Axios - ostensibly referring to the date Republicans want Ford to testify about her accusations "That's only, like, another 48 hours right?"

Hirono also railed against Grassley's assertion that Republicans have done all they can do to contact Ford and have her appear before his committee, telling ABC's "World News Tonight" on Wednesday that "That's such bulls*** I can hardly stand it".
