Amazon is reportedly baking Alexa into a microwave this year

Amazon plans to release at least 8 new Alexa devices, including a microwave oven and in-car gadget

These inclusions are the most likely, with Amazon looking to compete against Sonos' wireless speaker line-up (who already have a wireless amplifier for connecting wired speakers) and the Siri-enabled Apple HomePod.

The new lineup will also pit Amazon against other companies that make Alexa-powered devices.

Amazon is about to add its popular voice assistant Alexa to more than half a dozen new products - devices that range from a microwave oven to an in-car gadget, all of which will reportedly be unveiled at a company event later this month. Given the massive number of dash cams now on the market and Amazon's push into amplifiers and other audio products, the in-car gadget could possibly be a smart stereo instead.

Meanwhile, additional details on these forthcoming smart appliances are extremely slim: CNBC cities only "an internal document" and "people familiar with the matter" before later stating that Amazon declined to comment. Sonos released two speakers that feature Alexa.

It reflects Amazon's ambition to make its Alexa voice assistant ubiquitous, especially in areas where people spend most of their time, like the home and auto. It has also strengthened the smart speaker market, which is expected to be touch $30 billion by 2024.

An entire family of new Alexa-controlled products is apparently in the wings, including an amplifier, receiver and subwoofer.

It's unclear how commercially successful the new devices will be. This also expands Amazon's drive to make its Alexa voice technology widespread, especially in areas where people spend most of their time: at home and in a vehicle. Amazon also earlier this year bought the smart doorbell maker Ring.

Both Home and Echo are continually listening for commands, though Google and Amazon say nothing gets passed back to them until the speakers hear a keyword - "OK, Google" for Home and "Alexa" for Echo. Amazon could launch a few from the list towards September-end.

'We want customers to be able to use Alexa wherever they are, ' Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in the firm's most recent earnings report. With eight new Alexa-enabled devices, the company is working along that goal.
