More than 750000 copies of Woodward's book on Pres. Trump sold

New book alleges chaos in Trump White House

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and other countries without even warning members of his administration, veteran Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward says.

In his book, Woodward, who shot to fame more than 40 years ago for his reporting on the Watergate political scandal, portrays Trump as prone to profane outbursts and impulsive decision-making, with top aides anxious the United States is one Trump tweet away from a national or economic security crisis.

Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said sales were "with the force of a cultural phenomenon", as Woodward continues a round of media appearances this week.

Mr Mattis also issued a statement, re-tweeted at least twice by Mr Trump, saying, "The contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence". The former Goldman Sachs president was attempting to explain why the Federal Reserve rates would probably increase during his first term in office, but he was left "astounded" by Trump's stupidity, according to the book. By no means anti-Trump, Bob Woodward has produced a book that, for all its gossipy tidbits, gives far more respectability to Trump's program than it deserves.

But Woodward stands by his reporting.

"You crank out the great Washington denial machine", he says.

"At that moment, there was a sense of profound alarm in the Pentagon leadership that 'My God, one tweet and we have reliable information that the North Koreans are going to read this as 'an attack is imminent'".

Woodward replied that these "political statements", denying the quotes in the book, were designed "to protect their jobs". I think that's a much broader conspiracy than people think. In a note at the beginning of "Fear", the author notes that the work "is drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with first-hand participants and witnesses to these events".

While the op-ed prompted furious backlash from the president and his allies, 42 percent of respondents in the poll said they feel more comfortable when administration officials openly criticize the president.

"The people are not anonymous to me", he says of his sources.

"If he's going to sign it, he's going to need another piece of paper", Cohn said.

Indeed, the op-ed and the book both hammer home almost identical points about Trump's need for adult supervision, his penchant to do things at the spur of the moment, without being "derailed by forethought", his risky and impulsive inclinations, and so on. Woodward also writes that Trump refused to send any additional aid.

"The idea that the Secretary of Defense has to tell the president that all of these actions are created to prevent the ultimate catastrophe", Woodward said.

"Other times, we would fall over the edge, and an action would be taken".
