Cameras replace mirrors on new Lexus ES model in Japan

The 2019 Lexus ES Gets Cameras Instead of Sideview Mirrors, but Only in Japan

It's not the cleanest execution of the technology we've seen but it offers several advantages over conventional mirrors, according to Lexus. Both Audi and Japanese developers continue to lobby for mirrorless cars in the States, so only time will tell whether we'll be seeing new vehicles equipped with those stylish camera stanchions any time soon. The camera system monitors also allow a clearer view of the surrounding area around the auto than a normal mirror allows. Another highlight of the Digital Outer Mirrors over the conventional mirrors is that it is shaped to resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow, leaving the driver's view unaffected.

Lexus calls the system Digital Side-View Monitors and the images each camera captures are beamed to 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin. They provide enhanced views of the area around the vehicle at night and in inclement weather. We're talking here about cameras that replace traditional wing mirrors, and the Lexus is the first mass-production auto to bring that to the market. Moreover, the cameras offer an expanded view of the surrounding by augmenting the display area during turns or when backing up. Brightness will also be automatically adjusted to increase visibility at night and in the bad weather, improving security. Wind noise has also been reduced, resulting in a quieter cabin. If you are excited about ordering an ES with this mirror tech, Lexus says that it will only be available in Japan.
