Trump says Woodward's book 'Fear' about White House is full of lies

Trump, others dispute book's description of unhinged leader

Former Secretary of State John Kerry said the country faces "a genuine constitutional crisis" following Bob Woodward's reporting on President Donald Trump's dysfunctional White House and the unnamed senior administration official's op-ed assailing Trump in The New York Times on Wednesday.

Bob Woodward's book, Fear: Trump In The White House, will be available in USA bookshops on Tuesday after a week of excerpts, leaks and interviews that portray the president as dangerously erratic and uninformed.

Donald Trump almost declared war on North Korea through a tweet, but his defense secretary was able to beg him to reconsider, a new book claims.

The book, titled 'Fear: Trump in the White House, ' is written by the investigative journalist who uncovered the Watergate scandal that brought down former US President Richard Nixon in the 1970s. Woodward said that he interviewed more than 100 people, including one person nine times. When I worked in Washington during the Bill Clinton years, senior members of the administration would talk anonymously with him out of their own sense of fear - fear that their views, their spin, their contribution to the Clinton presidency would not be valued properly and that some rival would get his or her message across more effectively.

Pence and the President's counselor, Kellyanne Conway, tried to put the spotlight on the motives of the anonymous official, warning that there could be "criminal" dimensions to the op-ed, boosting Trump's calls for a Justice Department investigation.

In his interview with NPR, Woodward also addresses the anonymous op-ed published in The New York Times shortly after the first excerpts of his book were circulating.

Several prominent figures in the book have denied quotes that Woodward attributes to them.

"The people are not anonymous to me", he says of his sources.

Nixon was a mean-spirited man who took revenge on his enemies but compared to Mr Trump, he was bold, realistic, ambitious, thoughtful in foreign policy and - it nearly chokes me to write this - a liberal progressive compared to today's Republican party.

"I wouldn't have used it", Woodward told CBS's David Martin.

As part of his description of widespread White House dysfunction, Woodward recounted an incident in which the president complained about American troops in the Korean peninsula and that his staff tried to explain their objective.

In the book, Kelly is quoted calling the president an "idiot" and calling the White House under Trump "crazytown".

He said Mattis and Kelly are not being truthful, characterizing their denials as "political statements to protect their jobs". On Monday morning, he called the book a "joke", and labeled the veteran journalist a "liar who is like a Dem operative prior to the Midterms". "I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of [Woodward's] sources and he encouraged him to go public with it". "[The book describes] specific people on specific dates". Dems can't stand losing. He pointed to another instance described in the book, a meeting of the National Security Council in which Trump questions why the U.S.is funding military defenses in Europe.

Both have enraged the President and led to new levels of suspicion among his staff, many of whom were already at odds with each other.
