Serena Williams is calling out sexism in tennis. Here’s why

039;There is an incredible tension around Serena Williams'- Annabel Croft

Since the controversial U.S. Open and chair umpire Carlos Ramos's calls against Serena Williams, there has been back and forth discourse around sexism, racism, sportsmanship, ego, and what exactly we should call it when rules are not unilaterally enforced.

In the above clip, blame was placed on professional tennis at large, sexism and chauvinism, racism, on the official... on everyone but Serena Williams and her coach, who both committed violations of the rules. Serena denied seeing him. She broke her racket after badly misplaying a shot - and was penalized for it, the only justified ruling against her in what turned out to be a fateful trio.

Despite Williams pleading to Ramos that she would "rather lose" than "cheat to win," her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, later conceded that he was offering her guidance from his box at the match.

Well Julie here's a cartoon I drew a few days before when Australian male tennis player Kyrgios at the US Open was behaving badly.

"The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men versus women", WTA chief executive Steve Simon said in a statement."We do not believe that this was done last night". They're going to be allowed to do that because of today.

Williams's second-set meltdown overshadowed Naomi Osaka's 6-2, 6-4 victory, which made the 20-year-old the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam title.

Williams, 36, was fined $17,000 (£13,100) for code violations that included calling Ramos a "liar" and "thief". What was supposed to be a fairy-tale matchup for Osaka and the player she idolizes spun out of control after Williams was handed code violations that she described as unfair.

"You stole a point from me and you are a thief", Williams told Ramos prompting the game penalty ruling.

Whether or not this will be a lasting partnership between Osaka and Kawakubo remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: Comme des Garçons gets major points for helping empower and uplift this inspiring young athlete, even with something as simple as a little white dress. Retired tennis player James Blake said that Williams should have at least been given a warning by Ramos.

Djokovic also said he has empathy for Ramos as well as Williams and Osaka. I still think about that line once a week.

Players cannot receive coaching during a Grand Slam match (including the warm-up).

He said: "Yesterday's US Open final resulted in the crowning of a deserving new champion, Naomi Osaka".

"The WTA supports coaching through its on-court coaching rule, but further review is needed".
