Serena Williams' 'outburst' costs her at US Open

Final Countdown- US Open 2018

USA great Billie Jean King was among those coming down hard on Serena's side in her claim that chair umpire Carlos Ramos penalized her for comments that a male player could have gotten away with.

Williams took exception to a coaching violation handed to her by Ramos - adamant that she "would rather lose" than cheat. "We don't have any code, and I know that you don't know that and I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I'm telling you it's not".

After she was slapped with a second violation for racket abuse, Williams lost a point.

She was given three code violations for getting coaching signals, breaking her racket, that cost her a point and calling the umpire a thief, which led to her losing a game. "He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief, '" Williams said at her news conference.

Osaka also became the first Japanese woman to win a Grand Slam final after her 6-2, 6-4 triumph in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

She added, "I've seen other men call other umpires several things".

"I know everyone was cheering for her and I'm sorry it had to end like this", she said.

"When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalized for it", King tweeted.

"You owe me an apology", she demanded.

Former professional tennis player James Blake admits that he has said worst things than Williams during a match and escaped penalty. When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" & and there are no repercussions.

The call also resonated after another double standard revealed in the U.S. Open two weeks ago when French player Alize Cornet reversed her backwards shirt on the court, temporarily revealing her black sports bra, resulting in a code violation.

Williams was most unhappy about the third violation after she accused Ramos of being a thief for taking the point off her.

Williams's tantrum overshadowed an outstanding performance from Osaka, who made her second career title a Grand Slam after winning her first at Indian Wells in March.

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a "thief". She previously insisted that she didn't receive any coaching and said she wasn't sure if the umpire played any part in deciding the match's outcome. Williams denied the accusation and could be heard repeatedly demanding an apology from Ramos.

"The star of the show has been once again the chair umpire", he wrote.

British number four Liam Broady said he was "absolutely gutted" for Osaka, saying she had her moment "snatched away from her". "I was like, 'Wow, this is not how I felt when I won my first Grand Slam.' I definitely don't want her to feel like that".

"It was always my dream to play Serena in the U.S. Open finals, so I'm really glad I was able to do that", Osaka said.
