Trump wants investigation into who wrote explosive op-ed piece

Trump White House

Winston Churchill famously said that one should never let a good crisis go to waste and it seems US President Donald Trump may be taking his advice.

"Supposing I have a high level national security, and he has got a clearance, we talked about clearances a lot recently, and he goes into a high level meeting concerning China or Russian Federation or North Korea or something", he said.

The op-ed author wrote that Trump administration officials were a check on the president's erratic behavior, including some of his decisions on foreign policy and national security.

In the op-ed, the unnamed administration official claims there's "quiet resistance within the administration" and that many "are working diligently from within to frustrate the President's agenda and his worst inclinations".

"I think so, because I think it's national security", Trump said when asked if he wants the DOJ to investigate.

The New York Times increased security at its newsroom after backlash from an anonymous op-ed allegedly written by a White House official.

Trump, in an earlier interview with "Fox & Friends", said the Times should not have even had the piece.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said she wished Trump "would put the same vigor into getting to the bottom of what Russian Federation has been doing to our country in the elections".

Mr Trump said it was an issue of "national security".

The White House has been on the hunt for the author of the op-ed as well as the sources for a forthcoming book by journalist Bob Woodward, CNN has reported. He said they are looking into action against the Times itself.

They lined up to deny writing an incendiary New York Times opinion piece that was purportedly submitted by a member of an administration "resistance" movement straining to thwart Trump's most risky impulses.

"I think the author of the anonymous editorial, and frankly The New York Times, should be ashamed", Pence told Brennan.

A White House official later said Trump's call for a government investigation was an expression of his frustration with the essay, not an order for federal prosecutors to take action.

The op-ed isn't the only thing that has sent the White House scrambling this week. Friday night, Trump asked the state's two senators - Mike Rounds and John Thune - to change libel laws to avoid unfavorable coverage.

Some political observers see the "Deep State" as the heir to the "military-industrial complex" warned about by former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

"I would know. I am one of them", the anonymous official wrote.

One after another, President Donald Trump's top lieutenants have stepped forward to declare, "Not me".
