Colin Kaepernick appears in provocative Nike ad

Nike Announces New Ad Campaign Featuring Colin Kaepernick

It is part of the 30th anniversary of the company's "Just do it" campaign.

Kaepernick's inclusion in the "Just Do It" campaign marks another foray into politics for Nike, which responded to Trump's bigotry-fueled election and inauguration in 2017 with an ad titled "Equality".

Today, Nike unveiled its new black-and-white ad featuring Kaepernick.

Kaepernick was a quarterback at the San Francisco 49ers for six years and sparked a national debate when he knelt during the national anthem during the 2016 NFL season to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

Other players followed suit, leading to criticism from President Donald Trump.

Kaepernick's decision set off a wave of other protests in and around the National Football League, and the teams' owners have since been attempting to find a way to get players to stop protesting, negotiating with players along the way.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, Kaepernick has been under contract with the Swoosh since his original deal in 2011, though he has been sparingly used by the brand since his protests began making headlines. It was a loss for the NFL, which has claimed there was no collusion to keep Kaepernick out of the league, although dozens of less-qualified quarterbacks have signed with teams since Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to bring attention to social issues.

Nike's campaign also includes ads featuring Williams, NFL star Odell Beckham Jr and Seattle Seahawks rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin.

In August 2016, Kaepernick told Steve Wyche of NFL Media, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color".

But the league and union put that on hold after the Miami Dolphins faced backlash for classifying the protests as conduct potentially detrimental to the team - putting players at risk of fines or suspensions.
