McCain tributes echo with criticism of Trump

Former President Barack Obama lauded John McCain's efforts to push the nation to rise above "mean and petty" politics in his tribute Saturday to the Arizona Republican, who served for more than three decades in the Senate.

In another clear swipe at Trump, she said some resented her father for being "a great fire who burned bright" and what he revealed about their own characters.

"We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness", she said.

Trump had spent parts of the morning before McCain's funeral tweeting his anger about the investigation into his campaign's ties with Russian Federation during the 2016 election and highlighting quotes from a mutual critic of the FBI and Justice Department.

Henry also complained that Trump opponents like Obama claimed that McCain's funeral was "all about unity but they didn't invite President Trump, they didn't invite Sarah Palin and they made a decision to take some shots".

During his campaign, the President said McCain was not a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam and he declined to release a statement marking his death.

The Arizona senator is to be buried on Sunday in a private ceremony at his alma mater, the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

"If you're shamed into saying, 'How dare you support someone like Donald Trump or his views because John McCain was the standard bearer of goodness, '" Hegseth continued.

Trump left the White House as the late senator's daughter Meghan McCain delivered an emotional rebuke to Trump without mentioning his name.

"It's a politics that pretends to be courageous and tough but in fact is born in fear". But at a service McCain created to break down rivalries and encouraged civility, Clinton and Cheney, two of their parties' sharpest partisans, drew stares. His family did not invite Trump to Saturday's service at the Washington National Cathedral, but key members of his administration were in attendance, including daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner.

McCain, who died at the age of 81 last Saturday after a lengthy battle with brain cancer, was an iconic figure in USA politics.

By all accounts, McCain ended up liking both Bush and Obama but was not especially close to either man.

McCain also spent part of her speech paying tribute to John McCain as a loving parent, not just as a statesman or a war hero.

Former President Barack Obama drew a laugh from the crowd when he joked that McCain asking him to speak at his funeral was the senator's way of getting the last laugh.

"Senator John McCain passed today, all i can think about.he never stopped trying to do his best", Whoopi Goldberg tweeted.

Funeral services for former presidents have been held at the National Cathedral since 1901, according to its website.

After his death, Bush called McCain "a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order".

The two men's relationship remained rocky after the real estate mogul's surprise victory in the 2016 presidential election.

At the National Cathedral, attention will no doubt focus on the addresses by Bush and Obama.

Like what you see? In the end, I got to enjoy one of life's great gifts: the friendship of John McCain.

McCain was gone, said Bush, who called his 2000 rival for the GOP presidential nomination a friend.

"Back", McCain wrote on the last page of his recent memoir, "where it began".
