Luke Shaw earns England recall

Jamie Vardy has called time on his England career

Luke Shaw has been recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate for the UEFA Nations League opener against Spain and friendly against Switzerland, with Manchester United teammate Ashley Young making way.

"Luke has always been a player we have liked", said Southgate. "We have some exciting young players we will lose if they are not given that opportunity". He has a really hard decision as there is a lot of pressure on him.

"I'm really pleased for him that he looks like he's playing with confidence".

"It's been a big week for him that ends with a very important match against Burnley, this is the most important thing", Mourinho told a news conference on Friday.

Shaw - once the most expensive teenager in world football after joining United from Southampton for £30million - has not started for his country in three years after a double leg break damaged his progress.

Uncapped Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is included with Burnley's Nick Pope injured, while Joe Gomez and James Tarkowski also return.

"He's had an extra edge to his game", England coach Gareth Southgate said of Shaw.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez returns to the squad after missing out on the World Cup due to injury, while teammate Adam Lallana and Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski are also included, having been on the standby list for Russian Federation.

In the build up to the squad's announcement, both Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill all-but announced their retirements from worldwide football to focus on their club careers.

In Vardy's absence Southgate named Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck as the only strikers in the squad.

Martial was linked to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham but Woodward wants to avoid seeing the 22-year-old blossom into a superstar elsewhere despite recent off-field issues, which included the player being fined for returning to training late after leaving United's pre-season tour of the U.S. to attend the birth of his child.

That is in stark contrast to Walcott, who already has two goals and an assist this campaign and Toffees supporters therefore feel he should be back in Southgate's plans.

That match was the third/fourth place play-off at last summer's World Cup, where England were eliminated after defeat to Croatia in the semi-final.
