Florida's Ron DeSantis Doubles Down on 'Monkey This Up' Comment

PHOENIX AZ- MAY 22 Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio speaks to the media in front of the Arizona State Capitol before filing petitions to run for the U.S. Senate

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum upset a crowded field of well-funded candidates in Florida's Democratic gubernatorial primary Tuesday, a step away from becoming the state's first black governor.

DeSantis follows up by saying Gillum's socialist agenda would bankrupt the state, but monkey is frequently used as a derogatory term for Black people.

Florida's race for Governor Rick Scott's seat has been framed as a referendum on Trumpism versus progressivism-with DeSantis representing the former, and Gillum the latter.

Asked if he's afraid of President Donald Trump's support for DeSantis, Gillum told CNN that his race is about uniting the state.

Gillum, who would be Florida's first black governor and does not identify as a socialist, said Thursday that he doesn't need an apology from DeSantis but that DeSantis "needs to apologize to Florida voters".

This was made glaringly clear on Wednesday, after Gillum's Trump loving Republican opponent, Ron DeSantis made an appearance on Fox News. "To characterize it as anything else is absurd", his spokesman Stephen Lawson said.

Due to his strong Obama streak (one that I would like to think lives inside all of us), Gillum may tow the line, but is always able to keep it cute while calling out BS.

THEN when President Trump attacked him on Twitter, in a bid to make the opposing GOP candidate look good, Gillum clapped back at him so fast, social media immediately broke out in applause (and with several cackles).

DeSantis returned to Fox News in an attempt to clarify his remarks, telling host Sean Hannity that his comments had "zero to do with race". "Trump is going all out for DeSantis because he gets 100 percent of his news from Fox, and he knows DeSantis has gone to bat for him, and he knows Florida is important", said Trump adviser Roger Stone. "It just so happens that I think the communities that most resonate with me happen to also be folks from communities that don't typically participate in midterm elections". And it's a contrast to the staid, centrist Nelson and Gwen Graham, Gillum's top primary rival. He ran for the Senate in 2016 but dropped out when Republican Sen. Not misogynist, not racist, not bigots, they're going to be looking for a governor who is going to appeal to our higher aspirations as a state, "Gillum said".

The national liberal grassroots that embraced Gillum insists he's a net positive for Democrats.
