Mourinho defends players, record after Spurs loss

Manchester United

Mourinho has been unhappy with certain reports in the media, claiming they are too critical of his side which finished second last season, only behind runaway champions Manchester City.

A Harry Kane header and a Lucas Moura brace helped Mauricio Pochettino's side to an emphatic win at Old Trafford, preserving their 100% start to the season and piling further pressure on a beleaguered Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager still retains the support of the Old Trafford hierarchy, yet Mourinho surely knows United are in a hole.

"What that does is give the rest of the squad huge belief because it shows he has belief in us".

The same newspaper also suggests that if Mourinho were to lose his job, the number one target to replace him would be Zinedine Zidane.

"I think if you do what I did before the game, which was looking at the news and looking at Myanmar, I think that's hard times". "It won't be easy, but it's just the start of the season".

While a stony-faced Mourinho went through a weird post-match ritual of applauding the United fans in one corner of the stadium before angrily ending a news conference, Pochettino oozed contentment, embracing his players one by one.

"I was at the game and I understand Jose's frustration because on another day United win that game". "Look, it's only one goal, we've still got a lot of time" and then comes maybe another mistake. The first goal was a real blow. "It was wonderful. At the final whistle, the way they clapped the team was really respectful, and that was nice for us as players to receive after a disappointing result".

"We just have to bounce back", Pogba said.

"You want to make the miracle of my team played so well and strategically we were so, so, so, so, so, so good and you want to try and transform this press conference into let's blame the guy".

Shaw will surely get another chance to start this weekend after another bright United display, while an England recall when Gareth Southgate names his first squad since the World Cup on Thursday would be deserved.

When the game got underway, the teams fought out an entertaining but goalless first half.
