Manafort juror on a potential pardon: 'It would be grave mistake'

Trump former aide Manafort found guilty on eight charges

"I did not want Paul Manafort to be guilty, but he was, and no one's above the law".

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would consider pardoning his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was convicted on Tuesday of bank and tax fraud, according to a Fox News reporter who interviewed Trump.

The estimated trial timeline and exhibits were included in a joint filing Friday night in federal court in Washington by Manafort's defense and prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller III.

In all, prosecutors have more than 2,100 pieces of evidence prepared for the trial - more than five times the amount in Manafort's Virginia trial.

The second trial will delve deeper into Manafort's political work from 2006 to 2017, during which he allegedly made $30 million as a consultant for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine, the Washington Post reported.

Manafort is charged in the second trial with failing to register as a foreign lobbyist, conspiracy to launder money and tampering with witnesses after his indictment.

Manafort faces up to 80 years in prison.

The last count arose after prosecutors in June accused Manafort and a longtime associate they linked to Russian intelligence of repeatedly contacting two members of a public relations firm and asking them to falsely testify about secret lobbying they did at Manafort's behest. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson initially put him on house arrest after he pleaded not guilty in October.

Manafort's other lavish purchases - for home improvements, high-end home audio-video equipment and luxury cars - may have an encore at the DC trial as well. Manafort's team doesn't know yet if it will present a case, the filing said, but if it does that will take another three to four days.

"Should the defendant testify in the upcoming trial, the government intends to offer for goal of impeachment the defendant's prior convictions", prosecutors wrote in the filing, referring to his first case in Virginia, where he was found guilty Tuesday on eight counts out of 18 counts he faced.

A verdict form released Thursday showed that there was just one person holding out from conviction on the 10 other counts, with 11-1 in favor of conviction. Judge T.S. Ellis, who oversaw the trial in a USA federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, declared a mistrial on those 10 counts.

The jury ultimately reached unanimous guilty verdicts on eight crimes, for tax fraud, bank fraud and a fraudulent foreign banking disclosure in 2012. Prosecutors had offered to combine the indictments for one trial in the District, but Manafort declined.
