Kenedy misses last-gasp penalty as 10-man Newcastle denied in Cardiff

Nuno Espirito Santo

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that Matt Ritchie would have been his first-choice penalty taker after Kenedy had an injury-time spot-kick saved against Cardiff City in Saturday's 12pm kick-off.

Newcastle were reduced to 10 when Hayden, a half-time replacement for the injured Javier Manquillo, was shown a straight red card with referee Craig Pawson deeming his 65th-minute tackle from behind on Josh Murphy unsafe. Etheridge became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in each of his first two Premier League games, diving to his left to save a shot that entirely lacked conviction.

New signing James Maddison extended the hosts lead just before the break in what would ultimately be the match victor but Vardy soured the game in the second-half with an bad challenge on Doherty.

As a predictably fractious affair provided little entertainment, Kenedy was incredibly fortunate not to be sent off for kicking Camarasa when a 33rd-minute turn went awry.

Víctor Camarasa was the man who won it back for Cardiff.

Warnock believes that justice was done with the late penalty, awarded after the ball hit skipper Sean Morrison on the hand, as he does not believe Craig Pawson should have pointed to the spot.

In a game, we perhaps didn't deserve to take maximum points from we were presented with a golden chance to earn our first three points of the season.

The home side should have taken the lead at the beginning of the second period but Kenneth Zohore put his header wide, it was made easier for Neil Warnock's side with the dismissal of Isaac Hayden.

The former England global striker has also criticised Hayden for his challenge on Murphy.

You'll seldom see a better debut than this.

"It was a poor penalty, he's not happy he missed a good chance", the Spaniard told BBC's Match of the Day.
