Aretha Franklin, 'Queen of Soul', dies aged 76

Aretha Franklin news Singer is under the care of hospice workers at her Detroit home

Today, Franklin lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.

US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the family of, "a person I knew well - she worked for me on numerous occasions, she was terrific". "The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds", the family said. Thank you for your compassion and prayers.

Aretha Franklin lend her powerful voice not only to music - she also used it to speak out on behalf of the civil rights movement. "As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this hard time".

Franklin, a 17-time Grammy Award-winner, was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, and delivered her last performance at the Elton John AIDS Foundation party in NY last November. In 1987, she was the first woman to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She went on to win 18 Grammy Awards, sell more than 75 million records in her life, and become one of the best-selling selling artists of all time.

In Redding's version, the woman was sitting at home waiting for her man. Franklin turned that on its head. She would return to the nation's capitol in 2009 with a show-stopping rendition of "My Country Tis of Thee" for the inauguration of president Obama.

A preacher's daughter, Franklin began her career as a teenager in the 1950s, and her inimitable voice allowed her to hop between gospel, R&B, classical and jazz genres with grace.

Franklin was a force in the music industry and helped open so many doors for women who have followed her. "She will be missed!"

One of the songs I really enjoyed playing with her, because she was actually playing and singing, was A Brand New Me.

A memorial tribute is posted on the Apollo Theater marquee in memory of singer Aretha Franklin in Manhattan, New York, U.S., August 16, 2018.

The opera master was her friend, so when he fell ill at the last moment, Franklin stepped in to sing his most famous aria: Nussun Dorma.

"For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to and loving Aretha". Earlier this week, the Franklin Street subway station in Tribeca saw an Aretha Franklin homage as well, with some of her lyrics pasted on the station's steps and walls. She'd also developed a reputation for being a bit hard to work with. "The Heavens rejoice. Rest in heavenly peace". "Not only was she a uniquely brilliant singer, but her commitment to civil rights made an indelible impact on the world", singer and actress Barbra Streisand tweeted.

While the Queen of Soul has passed, she will not be forgotten here on Earth or in space, as asteroid 249516 Arethacontinues to orbit and travel in our solar system. "I'll never forget her", she said.

Through six decades of legendary music, Franklin inspired time and again, even earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 "for helping to shape our Nation's artistic and cultural heritage". "Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret". "And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance".
