North Korea Says US "Throwing Water" Over Confidence-Building Efforts

National Security Advisor John Bolton at the White House on Aug. 2 2018

The latest statement by the North's foreign ministry also accused USA officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

Guterres made the statement following talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday to discuss the US-led effort to rid North Korea of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The statement comes days after the United States stressed the need to keep up pressure on Pyongyang through tough sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons programme. The coal, which was carried from North Korea's port of Songrim, was transshipped at Russia's Nakhodka port the same month.

North Korea then released a statement following up on Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho's criticism of the USA last weekend for not carrying out simultaneous measures after Pyongyang also allowed the U.S.to pick up war remains last month - even though Washington did suspend joint military drills with South Korea this summer.

The frustration expressed by North Korea points to a fundamental disagreement between the two parties as to the timeline and progress of implementing what was agreed by Kim and Trump.

That would violate UN Security Council Resolution 2371, which ban import of North Korean minerals, as well as South Korea's own sanctions, and make them targets of a secondary boycott from the U.S.

"Rather than obsessing about the score, we will try to serve as a peace delegation with a mission to advance South-North sports exchange", Lee Sung-keun of FC Gangwon said.

The warnings come just days after North Korea's foreign minister called United States actions "alarming".

An official end to the Korean War was a key part of the Panmunjom Declaration signed by Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in their historic summit in April, ahead of Trump and Kim's meeting.

Yesterday, Pyongyang reiterated its own demand for the U.S. to agree to declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with an armistice and not a peace treaty.

North Korea has condemned the United States for placing fresh sanctions on it and called on the country to respond to its efforts to improve bilateral ties.

After the meeting, however, USA intelligence leaders were concerned that it appeared North Korea was being deceptive because the nation was actually boosting nuclear weapons at multiple "secret sites". The joint statement released after the event, however, was vague at best and provided no clear pathway for Kim to do so.

However, many used the same clip to point out that criticizing "Fox & Friends" for praising Kim but not other news sources were hypocritical. "The US should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner".
