McDonald's launches its own global currency

Big Mac from McDonald's

They can exchange their coin for one Big Mac beginning on Friday until the end of the year.

The hope is that the 50,000 coins up for grabs in Canada, and another 6,150,000 in 49 more countries around the globe, will begin to circulate quickly and be seen as one of the QSR's biggest global PR activations to date, adds Grachnik.

McDonald's is giving away free Big Macs as the company celebrates the 50th anniversary of its signature burger.

According to the Chicago-based fast-food chain operator, starting August 2 customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 restaurants around the USA while supplies last. "So we wanted a global celebration as unique as the burger itself".

The coins will come in five designs, each of which commemorates one of the sandwich's five decades.

The MacCoin will be redeemable at 14,000 US locations so chances are there'll be one close to you that'll take what the fast food empire is hailing as the "first fully food-back global currency".

Or, fans can just forgo the freebie and start a collection.

McDonald's worldwide presence is so broad that the price of a Big Mac is sometimes used to compare currency values between countries. In Canada alone, sales for the burger, over the last few years specifically, has "gone up a number of percentage points each year", says Grachnik. "August 2 would have been his 100th birthday, and I believe he would be very proud knowing his humble sandwich has made such a lasting impression that people all around the world can enjoy it wherever they find a McDonald's".

"The company has benefited from the ingenuity of its small business men", wrote Ray Kroc, who transformed the McDonald's into a global franchise, in his book, "Grinding It Out". It's located on Route 30 in North Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, just off the Irwin interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
