Ronaldo given two-year prison sentence over tax charges

Ronaldo Sentenced For Tax Evasion

Further reports indicate the deal involved Ronaldo avoiding jail if he pleaded guilty to the tax fraud charges.

Spanish tax authorities have approved a settlement with football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who will pay 19 million euros (US$22 million) to settle a tax fraud claim, prosecutors said on Friday.

Ronaldo had already reached a tentative deal with the state prosecutor's office, but Spain's tax authorities had yet to sign off on the agreement.

The fact that he is a first time offender also played in his favor in avoiding setting foot in prison.

The 33-year-old was given the sentence and a fine of almost €19 million (£17m) after pleading guilty to the four counts of tax fraud for which he was charged, between 2011 and 2014.

In 2014, Spanish authorities say he was late in declaring that year just 11.5 million euros (RM54.3 million) of revenue earned in Spain for the period spanning 2011-2014, when his earnings in his country of residence totalled 43 million euros (RM203 million).

The Spanish taxman also found he did not declare 28.4 million euros in image rights agreed for 2015-20, leaving 14.7 million owing.

The Argentinian originally paid a voluntary "corrective payment" of €5m (£4.4m) to cover the tax owed, plus a fine of €2m (£1.7m) and a further €252,000 (£223,000)) which equated to €400 per day for his prison sentence.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month prison sentence in 2017 on similar charges but under Spanish law was able to exchange the penalty for a fine.
