Sony says this will allow the IMX586 to "capture lovely, high-resolution images even with a smartphone".

The Sony IMX586, as it's called, has an interesting design feature that allows it to shoot both high-quality, lower-resolution, low-light photos as well as high-quality, higher-resolution, standard photos.

The Sony IMX586 is created to take smartphone cameras to a new level. It's not about taking huge images, it's about increasing the functions that the smartphone camera offers. "The 1.2" sensor can capture 8,000 x 6,000 pixels, which is a full 48 megapixels in 4:3 format.

Sony has also built the exposure control technology and signal processing functionality into the image sensor, allowing real-time output and a superior dynamic range that is four times greater than conventional camera sensors.

Sony has just announced a new CMOS sensor for smartphones that captures 48-megapixel photos - the highest pixel count in the industry. In low-light pictures, the signals from the four neighboring pixels are added, Sony says, which raises the sensitivity to a level equivalent of 1.6μm pixels (12-megapixel). Of course, this isn't ideal for daytime shots, so the image signal processor will perform array conversion in brighter environments for more detailed images with the 48MP resolution.

In addition to this, Sony's also shrunk the pixel size down to an impressive 0.8 μm. Perhaps the novelty of the sensor will be enough for DxOMark to actually put Sony's flagships to the test for the world to see where high-end Xperia phones truly stand. Even scenes with both bright and dark areas can be captured with minimal highlight blowout or loss of detail in shadows while viewing the image on the smartphone display.

Sony is pushing the envelope when it comes to phone camera sensors. It's possible that Apple could use this sensor in its future iPhones models.
