Israel evacuates 800 Syria White Helmets to Jordan: Army

White Helmets expected to be resettled in UK after rescue from Syria

Separately, a source told Reuters on Sunday the unrest in the border area had disrupted efforts to evacuate hundreds of members of Syria's "White Helmet" civil defence group over the Golan frontier into Jordan.

Raed Saleh, head of the Syrian Civil Defence as the White Helmets are also known, said a number of volunteers and their families were evacuated from a risky, besieged area and had reached Jordan.

A spokesman for the Israel Defence Forces said the operation was an "exceptional humanitarian gesture".

Jordan said on Sunday that it had taken in 800 White Helmets rescuers and their families from Israel and plans to transfer them to the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany.

Germany says it will take in eight Syrian rescue workers known as White Helmets, who were evacuated from southern Syria by the Israeli military.

Syrian men and civil defense volunteers, also known as the White Helmets, evacuate a victim from a building following an air strike on the village of Maaret al-Numan, December 4, 2016.

The White Helmets operate only in rebel-held areas, although they say they are non-partisan.

The Syrian government managed to get full control over a strategic territory at the border with Jordan following the operation.

A Canadian Foreign Ministry statement on Saturday said the White Helmets "have witnessed vicious atrocities committed by the Assad regime and its backers".

The White Helmets have rescued thousands of civilians trapped under the rubble or caught up in fighting in battered opposition-held zones along various fronts of Syria's seven-year conflict.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres of the Golan from Syria in 1967, in a move never recognised internationally.

The army was consolidating its control of a series of commanding heights that overlook the Golan frontier that had allowed mainly Islamist rebels who once controlled it a strong position in the sensitive border area.

An explosion is pictured at Quneitra at the Syrian side of the Israeli Syrian border, as seen from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israel July 22, 2018. It marked the first such Israeli intervention in Syria's civil war, now in its eighth year.

The rebel surrender negotiated by Russian Federation, a vital regime ally, also saw fighters hand over heavy and medium weapons and return government institutions to the area.

"The civilians were subsequently transferred to a neighboring country", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Last week, Israel delivered 72 tons of food, approximately 70 tents, 9,000 liters of fuel, as well as pallets of medicine, medical equipment, clothing and children's toys as part of six special operations in several locations in south west Syria. Previously, Israel would not allow the SAA to reach near the vicinity of their border, however the Israelis have a non-aggression agreement in place with Russian Federation to avoid any potential conflicts on the border.
