Donald Trump invites Vladimir Putin to U.S. despite uproar after Helsinki meeting

Putin has also signalled in the wake of his summit with Trump that he and the US President reached several agreements, but neither Trump nor the White House have confirmed any substantive agreements between the two countries.

The White House's announcement of an autumn visit came as a surprise to some, including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. "Did I hear that?"

The US Department of Homeland Security is working to meet a court-set deadline to reunify migrant children with their parents next week but would not take shortcuts to do so, the head of the department said on Thursday.

Nielsen's stunning claim comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin said outright he wanted Trump to beat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton because he believed the political neophyte's policies would be more friendly to the Kremlin.

"There were suggestions, comments, thoughts by President Putin with respect to that inquiry".

Five days after the Helsinki meeting, USA officials and lawmakers remained in the dark about what the leaders discussed in their two-hour, one-on-one session with only interpreters present.

The Russian ambassador said Moscow is ready to discuss a proposed new meeting between Putin and Trump, Interfax said.

"There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems ... but they can ALL be solved!" he tweeted.

Coats admitted on Thursday that he still doesn't know what was said in the USA president's one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki.

The announcement comes as Trump faces severe backlash for his flip-flopping this week as to whether he believes Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election. That's not my job.

In a reference to his summit last month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, he added: "Remember when they said I was too tough with Chairman Kim?"

"Putin's ongoing attacks on our elections and on Western democracies and his illegal actions in Crimea and the rest of Ukraine deserve the fierce, unanimous condemnation of the global community, not a VIP ticket to our nation's capital", she continued. He just said it's not Russian Federation.

"It is undeniable that the Russians are taking the lead on" election meddling, Coats told NBC's Andrea Mitchell in Aspen, Colorado.

Vice President Mike Pence, National Security Adviser John Bolton and chief of staff John Kelly stood united in the West Wing on Tuesday in their contention that the commander in chief had some cleanup to do.

National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said agreements between Russian Federation and the Ukrainian government for resolving the conflict in the Donbas region "do not include any option for referendum". "But know that it will to the best extent be unvarnished, non-politicised, and the best our incredible intelligence community can produce'".

Coats named Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea as the main threats to United States cybersecurity. What happened during the one-on-one between Trump and Putin with only interpreters present remains unknown. "Anybody that is advocating violence, we need to work to mitigate". It has remained unclear, however, what the president is seeking to accomplish from his negotiations with his Russian counterpart.

Nielsen said that America would be foolish to think that the Russians are not still targeting the US and that it should be "absolutely prepared to assume that they will try to interfere in all 50 states".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
