Trump defends Putin summit, vows 'big results'

The US President executed an astonishing 180 following his deeply criticised show of support for Vladimir Putin at their summit in Finland yesterday. Trump now says he accepts the USA intelligence community's conclusions that Russia DID meddle in the 2016 election.

"I said the word "would" instead of 'wouldn't, '" Trump told reporters on Tuesday. "Sort of a double negative", he said.

The president's Twitter statement came after he said he accepted the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

Even if it was a mere grammatical glitch, Trump made plenty of other comments in the same Helsinki news conference that gave Russian Federation the benefit of the doubt.

Trump took to Twitter early Wednesday to defend his Putin meeting, promising "big results" from better relations with Russian Federation and hitting back at "haters".

He said that Trump, on the other hand, has expanded sanctions on Russian companies, beefed up North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, increased USA defense spending, restored missile defenses to Poland and the Czech Republic and ended the ban of oil exports to try and compete with Russian energy.

Trump then added that "it could be other people also, there's a lot of people out there".

Some Republicans have come to Trump's defense. Rand Paul defended the president on "CBS This Morning," saying the president "did a good thing" by meeting with Putin.

"I think that is what's going to be remembered from this week", he said.

"I'm calling for a hearing with the USA interpreter who was present during President Trump's meeting with Putin to uncover what they discussed privately".

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump's comments on Tuesday were another sign of weakness, particularly his statement that it "could be other people" responsible for the election meddling.

Maria Bartiromo - one of Trump's most vocal cheerleaders at Fox Business - called the summit "probably the low point of the presidency so far".

Lawmakers from both parties have been sounding the alarm over fresh interference by Russian Federation as they push to fortify USA election infrastructure ahead of the midterm elections. "I'm not pro-Russia, pro-anybody, I just want to have this country be safe, I don't want nuclear weapons- even people thinking about it".

'It should have been obvious, I thought it would have been obvious, but I would like to clarify just in case it wasn't. A CBS News/YouGov poll last month found 52 percent of Florida voters gave Trump a thumbs up.

The US President also mentioned that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign was "a disaster for our country", while also saying that it had negatively impacted US-Russia relations. "This is about the Russians undermining the United States, not about Donald Trump".

"Look, you need to have a strategy, and I don't think he should be doing one-on-one meetings with heads of state because too much is at stake", Hurd said Tuesday on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360".

Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters.
