Days after Helsinki summit, Russian Federation shows off Putin's 'super weapons'

Trump and Putin handshake

In Moscow, Putin accused forces in the United States of trying to undermine the success of his meeting with Trump, but said the two leaders had begun to improve U.S. -Russia ties anyway.

US federal prosecutors accused Maria Butina this week of being a covert Russian agent and working to infiltrate USA political organizations, including the National Rifle Association, before and after Donald Trump's election as president.

White House aides are anxious that Trump will interpret the comments by Coats as a personal betrayal since they came so soon after the president praised him.

Republicans and Democrats both accused him of siding with an adversary rather than his own country after he shied away from criticizing the Russian leader for what US intelligence agencies say were Moscow's efforts to undermine the 2016 election.

"I have felt very strongly that, while Russia's actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election, let me be totally clear in saying that, and I have said this many times, I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", he said, but added, "It could be other people, also".

"I don't know what happened in that meeting", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said.

In a tweet Trump said he elicited a promise from Putin to help negotiate with North Korea but did not say how.

McFaul tweeted Wednesday that he hoped the White House would denounce "this ridiculous request from Putin".

Asked whether he would extradite 12 Russian intelligence agents indicted in the United States last week for hacking Democratic Party computers, he said he could meet the USA government "halfway". "In the United States, in Russian Federation, or anywhere else", Schumer said in a statement.

White House staffers are bracing for the president's reaction to Coats' performance, according to the Washington Post.

"The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or why it wouldn't be Russian Federation'".

Russia's official assessment of Trump's high-stakes summit with Putin is carefully upbeat.

Graham said Trump was right to criticize previous administrations for their handling of Russian Federation.

Trump has come under widespread domestic criticism about the meeting.

Trump's comments in support of arch-rival Russian Federation were condemned by both Democrats and Republicans. The U.S. and Russia have been on opposing sides of the conflict in Ukraine, unleashed after a popular uprising against a pro-Russian president and Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Putin doesn't blame Trump for that. The caption, accompanied by a winking emoji, said: "When you can't wait to meddle in someone's elections - Russian diplomats going to work at MID".

"I am not aware of anything like that since", Coats continued.

At the news conference with Putin, he was asked if he would denounce what happened in 2016 and warn Putin never to do it again, and he did not directly answer. "We believe that we held a referendum in strict compliance with global law", he said.
