Thunder ship off Carmelo Anthony in multi-team trade

Carmelo Anthony Thunder

In Oklahoma City, he'll likely be the focal point of a Thunder second unit that will have upgraded its athleticism by adding Schroder and center Nerlens Noel.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade Melo and a protected 2022 first-round pick to the Hawks in exchange for point guard Dennis Schroder.

The 34-year-old forward, a three-time Olympic champion for the United States and 10-team NBA All-Star, will be paid his entire $27.9 million contract and have the freedom to join any club, with the Houston Rockets reportedly in hot pursuit.

OKC wasn't in an easy position here.

The Thunder could have saved $107 million with the waive-and-stretch provision on Anthony's $27.9 million contract, but hunted a trade that allows them to save slightly less money and improve the roster.

This Carmelo Anthony trade will end up being a three-team deal: Muscala will end up with Sixers, Timothe Luwawu Cabarrot will go to OKC and Justin Anderson will go the Hawks, I'm told.

Anthony's lone season in Oklahoma City was largely a bust. His playing time dwindled in the playoffs and he wasn't happy.

As a bonus, the Thunder will add the 6-6 Luwawu-Cabarrot, 23, an athletic wing who's in the Thunder's developmental mold. Anthony averaged 11.8 points in the series, shooting just 37.5 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from 3-point range.

By far the biggest win in this deal for the Thunder, however, is getting rid of Anthony.

Per Wojnarowski, Thunder general manager Sam Presti and head coach Billy Donovan "were given permission to talk with Schroder and they're enthusiastic about [the] partnership". As we've seen, even a post-lottery pick can be incredibly useful in the right hands.

Anderson was a former first-rounder (21st overall in 2015) with the Mavericks whose athletic ability and work ethic have made him a team favorite both in Dallas and Philly.
