European press mocks Trump as 'weak,' 'Putin's poodle' after summit

Now Russian Prosecutors Want to Question US Intel Agents

"I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today", Trump told a joint news conference with the Russian president.

At the press conference, which followed an hourslong private meeting between Trump and Putin, Trump cast doubt on the USA intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 United States presidential election. And when asked what he thought of the intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation launched an aggressive campaign against the United States by interfering in the election, he bolstered Putin's denials and said Russian Federation would have had no reason to meddle.

Trump tweeted from Air Force One on Monday as he travelled back to the United States that he has "GREAT confidence" in his intelligence team but 'in order to build a brighter future, we can not exclusively focus on the past'.

"Negotiations with Trump took place in an open and constructive atmosphere, I find them rather successful and useful", Putin added.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Trump had made the United States look like "a pushover" and said the president's remarks "saddened" him.

While long-time Trump supporter Newt Gingrich, a former Republican Speaker of the House, called it Mr Trump's "most serious mistake".

This time, though, he was on foreign soil, standing next to Vladimir Putin, the very man whose government is accused of interfering in the 2016 election to favor Trump.

Fox News Host Neil Cavuto said of Trump's inability to challenge Putin to never interfere with an election again, "But he didn't [challenge him]..."

House Speaker Paul Ryan says there's "no question" that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election and continues to try undermine democracy in the United States and around the world.

Trump said he'd give it to his 12-year-old son Barron, a football fan.

"We don't have anything on them, and there can't be anything on them", Putin said through a translator in an interview with Fox News anchor Chris Wallace.

Lasha Tchantouridze is a professor of diplomacy and worldwide relations at Norwich University, who specializes in Russian Federation and the U.S. He says this meeting between the two leaders could be the start of something different.

"I will say this, I don't see any reason why it would be [Russia]", he replied, before quickly trying to defer to the Democratic National Committee's server that was hacked.

Abortion-rights activists dressed as heavily pregnant Donald Trumps demonstrated on the streets of Helsinki, just a stone's throw away from where the United States and Russian presidents are scheduled to meet.

Earlier on Sunday, HRC Global Director Ty Cobb called out the leaders at a rally in Helsinki, attacking Trump's domestic policies as well.

In all, Trump's remarks amounted to an unprecedented embrace of a man who for years has been isolated by the US and Western allies for actions in Ukraine, Syria and beyond. Trump tweeted: "While I had a great meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, raising vast amounts of money, I had an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation".

"I thought we were doing horribly before today", the president said.

"There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russian Federation, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals", he said.

The host also mocked Trump for blaming both the United States and Russian Federation for the break down in the relationship between the two countries. A former chairman of the Republican National Committee even said Trump was acting as if he were an "asset" next to his "handler".
