Schumer calls on Trump to cancel Putin meeting following indictment

Trump Seemed To Exhibit Multiple Personalities At NATO Summit

ELLESBOROUGH, England - The Friday indictment of a dozen Russian nationals for hacking into the Democratic National Committee landed days before President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding a stunning new dimension to a meeting already fraught with tension.

Trump and Putin are meeting in Helsinki on July 16 for a summit, which is being hosted by Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

Vladimir Putin has everything to gain from his first summit on Monday with US President Donald Trump.

He noted that talks would cover Putin's war in Syria, his other war in Ukraine, Russia's annexation of Crimea, and its meddling in the 2016 United States election. "We do have to talk to them, but we have to do so very clear-eyed and that is it is a complicated but important relationship".

When asked about his upcoming meeting with Putin, Trump said he will focus on Ukraine, Syria and nuclear proliferation.

"Will we be talking about meddling? I don't think you'll have any, 'Gee, I did it, I did it, you got me.' There won't be a Perry Mason here I don't think", he continued.

"President Trump must be willing to confront Putin from a position of strength and demonstrate that there will be a serious price to pay for his ongoing aggression towards the United States and democracies around the world", McCain said in a statement.

The charges come as Mueller continues to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the presidential election.

Trump's comments come before his summit with Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

Speaking to the press on Capitol Hill, Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner said that the White House should make sure Trump is not left alone with Putin. He seldom talks about relations with Russian Federation in terms of America's strategic interests, whether they be military or economic or anything else, let alone Russia's actions.

Trump's GOP defenders argue it is not what he says, but what he does, that counts most when dealing with Moscow.

If you've listened Trump talk about Putin over the last few years, you've seen this again and again.

Reversing the harsh criticisms he has leveled at NATO, President Trump says the alliance is very strong - in part because of promises from America's allies to boost their military budgets to 2 percent of their gross domestic product.

I dont "believe" Putin interfered in our elections I know for a fact he did.

During Friday's news conference with May, Trump dismissed critics of the meeting, characterizing it as deliberations that led to positive results, including every member vowing to allocate more money for defense.

He said the Cold War had ended a long time ago, and that in some areas, such as global security, arms control, and fighting worldwide terrorism, Russian and USA interests coincided.

'I think that really hurts our country and it really hurts our relations with Russia, ' Trump said. "If you don't have deliverables, nobody wants a summit because you going to be questioned: why did you got meet this person, [and] shook hands if you have nothing to sign?"

Never mind that the 2 percent guideline was established in 2006 - or that other leaders more or less snickered at Trump's 4 percent ask.

He did allow, though, that there was "a new sense of urgency" about increasing military spending.
