Manafort transferred to Alexandria jail, mugshot released

Then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort talks to reporters at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July 2016

The special counsel Robert Mueller's team is prosecuting Manafort on over 20 charges between two different trials - one in Virginia in July, and another set for mid-September in Washington, DC.

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates' units" with its own bathroom and shower.

While the judge has ordered Manafort to change jails, he hasn't ruled on the larger motion to delay the trial.

Manafort's prosecution spawned out of U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. The request was made in a filing on Wednesday.

During his time at Northern Neck jail, ABC News reported that Manafort stayed in a cell by himself in the facility's VIP section, surrounded by walls painted in two shades of brown: bagel and biscuit.

"If five lawyers take up five rooms, then you wait in line for someone to finish", defense attorney Marina Medvin said.If they take up the entire time slot, then you're out of luck - you need to leave and come back and hopefully be first in line".

The jail where Manafort spent the last month is in Warsaw, Virginia, nearly 100 miles from Washington, D.C. Manafort has been charged with money laundering, bank fraud, and other violations.

Manafort has even "developed a workaround" to send emails, which prisoners normally would not be allowed to do, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors with the special counsel asked the judge to jail Manafort after learning that he had attempted to contact potential government witnesses in the days after Mueller brought a superseding indictment against him.

Manafort has faced an uphill legal battle. They said Mueller's team "does not pause to consider the reasons a detained defendant might have to make his situation sound better when speaking with concerned friends and family".

Manafort's attorneys criticized the prosecutors' descriptions of the jail conditions and his emailing tactics, saying the idea of being a VIP is exaggerated. Ellis said he made that decision in response to Manafort's complaints about the difficulty in getting ready for the trial.

The judge called the defense's objection to the jail move "surprising and confusing".

But soon after the judge issued his order, Manafort's lawyers essentially told the judge "never mind" and urged the court to keep Manafort in his current jail in Warsaw.

The transfer was ordered after Manafort's attorneys complained that being held in a jail so far away from Alexandria, the location of the July 25 trial, was impeding his ability to prepare for the trial.
